Navigating the Rollercoaster: Reflections on Our First Years Challenges with Our Small Photo Booth Business

Holding a large prop with a beautiful gold foil backdrop

Embarking on the journey of running our photo booth for the past year has been nothing short of a challenge. As we reflect on the lessons learned, it's evident that our growth curve is substantial, yet the road ahead is long. From constructing our very first photo booth to delving into the intricacies of SEO and marketing, the evolving list of areas for improvement and upgrades highlights the dynamic nature of our venture. Summer brought a surge in requests for graduations and quinceañeras, but as winter slows settled in, self-doubt crept in. Were we doing something wrong? Was our service the issue? If this year's trends serve as a forecast for our small family-owned business, preparing for the summertime rush and the slower winters is imperative.

Learning Curve and Challenges: From Facebook Marketplace to Meta Suites and Square

Digital marketing, mobile, social networking, email, ads, SEO, as a small business owner and the struggles we have to manage

Navigating the online landscape has proven to be a challenging aspect, especially as a small two-owner business. Beyond the intricacies of actually running a business, understanding how to manage online resources such as Facebook Marketplace, Meta Suites, and Square has been a formidable task.

Facebook emerged as a powerful marketing tool, and it remains a cornerstone of our marketing strategy. However, our first attempt on Facebook Marketplace left us bewildered. Our ad, crafted on Canva (Click this link for a great, user-friendly website for creating just about any digital document you can think of!) and posted to the marketplace, was swiftly flagged and removed. "What the heck is going on?" Repost... Flagged... Removed... UUURRRRRGGGGG! Breathe... Reset... Troubleshoot. The frustration mounted as we realized that, unlike casual users selling second-hand items, businesses must "pay to play" for their ads to be visible. We adjusted our approach, recognizing that our use of Facebook had evolved into lead generation, client database building, email collection, market research, analytics, and more. Ok, Facebook Marketplace and big wigs, point taken!

In the dynamic and visually driven photo booth industry, marketing presents its own set of challenges for small businesses. The highly experiential nature of our service require creative strategies to effectively showcase its value online. Standing out in a market filled with similar offerings demands continuous innovation in both equipment and creative content. Moreover, the evolving algorithms and pay-to-play models on platforms like

Meta Business Suites can be particularly daunting for businesses with limited advertising budgets. This necessitates a strategic shift towards utilizing Facebook for lead generation, client database building, and market research, acknowledging that direct sales may require a more nuanced approach. Building a robust online presence through visually-oriented platforms like Instagram becomes crucial in a sector where visual appeal plays a pivotal role. Thus, for small business owners in the photo booth industry, success hinges on finding the right balance between creative marketing, effective social media utilization, and adaptability to the ever-changing online landscape.

Unraveling the Complexity of Meta Business Suites

Headaches involved when operating a small business in a world that is dedicated to big business

Expanding our online presence, we created business profiles on Instagram and Facebook. The introduction of Meta Business Suites, however, proved to be a labyrinthine challenge. Navigating the multitude of pages, tabs, menus, and submenus felt overwhelming. While my memory fails me on the specifics of my earlier struggles with Meta Business Suite, revisiting it for this blog reignites the feeling of being lost in its complexity. Looking specifically at the ads tab and ads manager section adds another layer to this complexity; these areas, in particular, are incredibly overwhelming. Grant it, I am fairly familiar with technology, and I know that I can get around a mountain of things and make the business 'function.' However, it's hard to shake the feeling that we're being made to jump through loop after loop for things that shouldn't be too complicated. It underscores the challenges small business owners face in grappling with the technicalities of apps and programs, especially in the realms of marketing and SEO. While the ideal scenario would involve dedicated roles for content creation, web development, and marketing, our two-owner, two-employee setup necessitates us to wear multiple hats

Undeterred, we maintain a consistent presence on Facebook through a running ad that has delivered favorable results. As we navigate the intricate landscape of online platforms, our commitment to learning and adapting remains unwavering.

The Website Dilemma and the Role of ChatGPT in a Small Photo Booth Business

AI or artificial intelligence also known as large language models and how we use it to support our small business

Initially, potential customers would inquire about our website, and with a straight face, we redirected them to our social media platforms. Recognizing the limitations of relying solely on Facebook, Instagram, and our running ad, the need for a website became evident.

Cue the headache!

Undertaking the task of creating our website was daunting, taking about three long weeks, multiple coffee runs, and the invaluable assistance of ChatGPT. ChatGPT has truly become an indispensable asset in our small business operations. Its multifaceted capabilities extend far beyond initial expectations, proving to be a versatile tool in various aspects of our day-to-day tasks. From crafting compelling and professional emails that resonate with clients to meticulously drafting contracts that meet legal standards, ChatGPT has consistently demonstrated its prowess in streamlining our communication and documentation processes.

One of the most remarkable applications has been in the creation of our employee handbook and employment contracts. This has not only facilitated smoother onboarding but has also contributed to a more transparent and harmonious work environment.

Despite occasional media skepticism surrounding biases, we've found that the benefits derived from ChatGPT far outweigh any concerns. The tool's ability to understand context and adapt its responses to our specific needs has been a key factor in building trust within our team and among our clients. In fact, we've come to rely on ChatGPT not just as a productivity booster but as a strategic asset that gives us a competitive edge, allowing us to stand out even against industry giants.

The speed and efficiency with which ChatGPT operates have been instrumental in meeting tight deadlines and managing workloads effectively. This, coupled with its consistent performance in generating high-quality content, has elevated our business processes to new levels of efficiency. As a small business owner, having a tool like ChatGPT at our disposal has not only saved time but has also enabled us to allocate resources more strategically, ultimately contributing to our bottom line.

ChatGPT has indeed become a game-changer for small business owners like us. Its integration into our daily operations has not only enhanced our productivity and professionalism but has also positioned us as forward-thinkers in our industry. As we continue to explore and tap into the full range of ChatGPT's capabilities, we are excited about the future possibilities and the continued positive impact it will have on our business.

In conclusion, as we gaze at the vast landscape of big business, it's easy to get discouraged. While reaching their level might seem daunting, tools like ChatGPT empower us and level the playing field, offering advantages that can't be ignored.
